Writing for the June edition of Buddy Magazine, physiotherapist and one2one Clinic Director, Rhian Davies, explains why exercise is important for health
I’m always encouraging my clients to take regular exercise, not only for good physical health (heart, bones, joints, muscles etc.) but for good mental health and wellbeing. Physical activity has been shown to increase energy levels and mental alertness, have a positive impact on our mood and is very effective in relieving stress.
I have always had an active lifestyle and I do this for health reasons, not for a six pack!
When you see images in the media of that ‘perfect body’ in the gym or running along the beach, it can alter your perception of exercise and put you off. Try not to be intimidated by these images. anyone of any age and ability can exercise.
The important thing to remember is exercise should be enjoyable, so do whatever makes you feel good. Whether it’s a walk in the countryside, dancing to your favourite tunes, riding a bike or skipping, it’s all about moving your body.
During the COVID-19 pandemic it might not be so easy for you to stay active, particularly if you’re self isolating. Perhaps you’re struggling with lockdown and finding it hard to motivate yourself.
You can still be active from the comfort of your own home and garden. Try going up and down our stairs or a step contintinuously for 10 mins, do some body weight exercises (squats, lunges, planks, press ups), use tins and water bottles as weights while doing arm movements, or do some gardening. There are plenty of options at home for physical activity.
However, if you’re looking for something a little more structured, online exercise classes are a great way to stay active at home. You will find an abundance of free exercise videos and live classes on social media so give them a try. We also have a good selection of free videos on our Coronavirus Support Page.
If you’re apprehensive about trying out these workouts and want more guidance, our team of experts at one2one take regular classes on zoom.us and also offer 1:1 sessions.
We have several online classes per week of yoga, core strength and strength and conditioning circuits taken by our physiotherapists, pro athlete and instructors. Our experts are here to guide and monitor you through each exercise to make sure you’re doing them correctly, getting the most out of your workout and not causing injuries.
If you aren’t being active already, maybe now is the time to start. Take care of your health and wellbeing by making exercise an essential part of your day.
